"Do We Ban App Distractions, Too?" - NYTimes.com
Yes. My response to POGUE is that we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes ot drunken driving, and yet we know people will drink and drive. In fact, we even let us have one drink and still drive. That's because we believe that this is still safe. No one has demonstrated that it is safe to do anything else while behind the wheel of a vehicle and there is absolutely no reason not to continue to ban as much as possible and apply sanctions that hurt a lot, up to but not including the hurt of someone injured as the result of distracted driving.

Hyde Park "corner" on the Chapel Hill buses?
The current dust-up over the advertising on Chapel Hill buses calling for an end to US assistance to Israel (or maybe just a significant reduction) is curious. Penny RICH, the departing Council member, brought up that she is Jewish and says she is uncomfortable with the advertising. First off, she should not participate in any votes on this matter given the lens through which she seems to be looking at this. Second, why not - as a compromise - keep the debate alive in this very public place (the bus) by setting aside a panel in every bus for this type of social/political advocacy advertising? That way, everyone is free to use it, but everyone would also know that it will be restricted to one place on each bus? While mentioning Penny RICH, Lee STORROW has reported said that we need to have representation on the Council from the Jewish community of Chapel Hill. No, we do not. We need to have as much diversity in the Council membership as possible, but no group is deserving of representation more than any other. I am an Irish citizen, as well as a citizen of the US - where is the Irish representative on the Council? Or the Hindu? Or the New York? Or the Trans Gender (not sure how that is written)?

Car route map?
I'd love to see a map generated that would take an average weekday - surely, one can pick a day that would give something generally applicable as a result - and an average weekend day ---- plot in some graphically compelling way where cars go in the course of that day. In other words, a certain number of cars come from Chatham County and go up 15-501 to UNC; what number turn off on 54 and go to I-40? Where do cars leaving Pittsboro or Carrboro go in the course of time they area away during that day. A number of assumptions would have to be made - such as that cars leaving in the early morning likely are based at the point of departure, but that later in the day, they are returning. Anyway, a color-enabled map would be a fascinating thing to watch. Why do it? Because it would help us determine where people go and then try to sort through what it might take to get them to go to other places or not to go at all.

My exchange with the Mayor of Mebane
"Dear Mr. Mayor,
As we look at other communities in the area, I am relieved now to know that we will not have to explore Mebane as a future place to live. I am grateful for only one thing in connection with the advertisement – it informs us that Mebane is not a place where I would shop, and least of all, live.
Thanks for your response. If you
don’t want the rest of us to associate this store and its guns with Mebane, you

however, it would appear that you delighted to have them nearby and just wish

Good Evening, Terry:
1. I am sorry you were so distraught over a newspaper ad.
2. Mace Sports is not a Mebane business resident.
3. Mace Sports is located outside Mebane, in Orange County,
is a legal business, and has, apparently, been issued proper permits for the
operation of a business of this type. They simply have a Mebane postal
address as do dozens of other businesses located outside our city limits.
Their taxes are paid to Orange County, not to the City of Mebane.
4. It is not the business of The City of Mebane to dictate
what Orange County may or may not allow within its borders, or to dictate what
businesses permitted by The State of North Carolina must sell, display, or
advertise.
5. The City of Mebane is a fine place in which to live, work,
raise a family and enjoy life.
6. The City of Mebane is a growing community of 12,000
people, supported by an excellent City Administration and Staff, well financed,
and providing many services needed and requested by our citizens.
7. We have a fine City Council that is constantly alert to
protect and maintain the liveability of our citizens.
8. If you have not had the opportunity to visit and learn
more about Mebane, we invite you to do so.

Dear Mr. Mayor,
I live in Chapel Hill and have for 13 years.
No doubt there are some places here, or nearer than Mebane,
that sell firearms. Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walmart, come to mind as I think
one or both sell guns at their stores in Durham, just across the county line.
But when I saw the full page ad for a store that purports to
be in Mebane – Mace Sports – today in the Herald-Sun, I was both extremely
angry and disappointed to see what that ad contained. If you have not seen it,
you should ask your staff to get you a copy.
Never have I been as sorry to recognize how freely available
are these awful weapons of human destruction as I was when I looked at the full
page of guns and rifles promoted by Mace.
So this is – for today – just the statement of one citizen
in saying that any thought we’ve had of visiting Mebane, and shopping there, is
now crossed off the list. I surely do not want to contribute a dime to any
community that apparently supports an establishment selling the kinds of
instruments of death that I see in that advertisement.
As we look at other communities in the area, I am relieved now to know that we will not have to explore Mebane as a future place to live. I am grateful for only one thing in connection with the advertisement – it informs us that Mebane is not a place where I would shop, and least of all, live.
Whether I share this and related thinking with others and
urge them to express their views to you and others in Mebane remains an open
question.
In the meantime, I could not live with myself without
expressing my horror to the community’s top elected official.
Regards,
Terry MAGUIRE"

A good piece from WUNC. Rarely do I hear anything this comprehensive. It's just too bad that they don't provide a lot more connections from the story so that people can pursue the subject efficiently. (There is only one link.)
In any case, I really want to understand this better and the argument about whether it makes sense.
For me, the real task is not building the system; it is in convincing people to locate themselves to minimize time spent in their cars and to adapt their lives to public transit starting with the bus. Until we do both of those things en masse, we are not likely to find much success with simply expensive and maybe a bit faster options.

had not been filled. The pharmacist, who knows me, said it would done in 10 mins.
Perfect. I walked around just a little and wanted to do a price check
on some suntan lotion and so went up front for just a moment to do
that. Came back, the pharmacist looked at me - no one said anything. I stood
for another 10-15 mins and no one said anything. The clerk asked if I was being helped and I said I was waiting. Finally, I looked at the "Waiters" tray
and there was something in it. So I asked the clerk if that could be mine. It was but
she took another customer and took forever ahead of me. I told her I
was very disappointed and that she should have checked the
tray and called out my name again. The pharmacist heard me and said he had but I
was at the front of the store. I told him he knows me and he saw me
standing there later and said nothing. So I stormed out and called the
manager who seemed quite concerned about what I related.

Wal-Mart Bribery Scandal Complicates U.S. Expansion Plans - NYTimes.com
Which news organization is asking questions about Wal-Mart in Chapelboroham? I would think a review in detail of the application for a new store on 15-501 south of Chapel Hill is in order given the inquiries that have been launched elsewhere. The more we know, the better able we will be to formulate our own opinions.

Vertical Gardens in Mexico a Symbol of Progress - NYTimes.com
Don't we have vast opportunities to do the same - say, around ugly telephone polls done in such a way that the growing kudzu or whatever does not endanger the wires?

Imagine
Imagine you are a Chapel Hill Town Council member. Imagine that the horrific bus accident in Switzerland had been caused by a driver using a cellphone. I am not saying that happened, and not even suggesting it actually happened. But imagine that it did. Then ask yourself - how can I sleep at night if I don't seize the opportuinty to enact a local restriction on the use of cellphones et al while driving a motor vehicle? Imagine the unimaginable - a horrendous accident caused by someone who legally talking on the phone while driving in Chapel Hill. What would you do? I'd enact the ordinance, making the offense a primary one, and ask the Chapel Hill Police to enforce it aggressively. And I would sleep more soundly.

The Herald-Sun - Texting while driving cost 100
Why don't we increase this to about $500?
In France, the fine for using a cellphone while driving is 135 euros or about 175 USD + 3 points on the driver's license.

Coversheet
I take it that this will be voted upon 12 March 2012.
If anyone gets stopped and charged with such a violation, how many people are simply going to say they were talking with family. Will the Police subpoena phone records? I doubt it.
The propopsed exemption reads:
"Is for the sole purpose of communicating with the motor vehicle operator's
parent, child, legal guardian or spouse."
Why can't the driver pull over in that case?

Carrboro occupiers, Mayor leave vacant building | NBC17.com
If people trespass on private property, they are breaking the law and ought to be prosecuted for the offense. There is no imaginable justification in this instance and Carrboro ought to show that it respects the law and proceed with arrests and prosecution. The protesters should know that if they break laws in exercising their right to protest, they will be arrested and charged. Obey the law and protest all you like; break the law and go to jail.
